KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — The Facebook group against the mega tower project in Kuala Lumpur is organising a get-together with anti-Lynas supporters to “eat cake” at a restaurant in Kuantan on Father’s Day.
The online group, which celebrated its one-month anniversary with a party at eight locations all over the country, is holding another party called the “Patriotic Fathers Cake Party” on June 18 at 9pm in Kuantan.
The 1M Malaysians Reject 100-storey Mega Tower group was set up on Facebook in mid-October last year as a campaign platform and for citizens to vent their outrage against the Najib administration’s proposed RM5 billion building under Budget 2011.
“In conjunction with ‘Daddy you’re my hero!’ event, we are proudly to associate our eighth (month anniversary) party with Sunday’s anti-radiation activity. Wear your anti-Lynas T-shirt, bring a small Malaysian flag, hold the hands of papa, have a slice of cake and show the solidarity of Malaysian to say no to toxic and violence!
“Wave our proudest Jalur Gemilang to defend our beloved motherland from toxic radiation material,” it said.
Many residents around Kuantan and environmentalists opposing the controversial Lynas rare earth refinery plant have raised fears of a repeat of the radiation pollution from a similar plant in Bukit Merah, Ipoh.
Nearly 20 years after it was shuttered, the Bukit Merah plant is still the subject of a RM300 million cleanup.
Lynas is anticipating a windfall of RM8 billion a year from 2013 onwards from the Kuantan plan from the refining of rare earth metals that are crucial to the manufacture of high-technology products such as smartphones, hybrid cars and bombs.
